it uses has to entirely below 1024 to boot correctly.  On my system I have a
16Mb partition mounted as /boot near the beginning of the drive (ie below
the 1024 cylinder mark) where my kernel images and System.map lie.

I think this is right. Another problem is, lilo sometimes seems to have
problems being in the boot sector of drives other than hda/sda, etc. I can't
remember what the problem is exactly, but I know I've run into trouble
before. This really applies if you've upgraded to a PCI UDMA/66 controller
(like me), and still have the mobo IDE1 & IDE2 controllers active. I think
YaST also prevents installing lilo to other than hda, but I might be
dreaming.

(Also: you may want to check that you've not been 'gotcha-ed' - you are
installing lilo to the master boot record, not the linux partition or
something??)
