The only thing that's wrong is that the operator who screwed it knows
nothing about graphics cards.  He couldn't tell the difference between
a crap monitor (which it was) and a working graphis card.

ok I'll just throw the hard drive up the road.  I've no clue at all
what's been compiled into the kernel or what's missing.

I *did* make it very clear to Bob not to do anything he shouldn't. 
Looks like he's got ears like foam bricks ?
