Mmm, but you've not pinned it down to kernel (unlikely) or configuration
(likely). I was taking it for granted you'd checked the mouse ;)))

emacs (brrr).. /etc/X11/XF86Config on this box. You'll get a lot of
mileage out of what Jose said, I think - get gpm working before trying X.
gpm should run with little configuration, and if that works then you know
it's a configuration problem.
If you're configuring X, you may as well use XF86Setup - much easier than
hacking the file by hand. The only time I've ever hacked the file by hand
was to squeeze PAL signal out of the video card; even xvidtune wouldn't
let me do that.... there are key bindings available; even if the mouse
doesn't work.
