There is a little detail that GPM and Xserver both like to own the
mouse. So if GPM is running when you start the X server, you may have
a lot of trouble (I've only observed this once, on a Gateway 2000
notebook). In that case you need to either kill off GPM (the old
solution, and the one I'm using) or tell Xserver that the mouse is the
GPM repeater device (something in /dev, /dev/gpmdata according to man,
but it don't exist on my office system so I'm not sure).
You may also need to start gpm in a special way (with the -R flag, see
the man page).
