1.91 is really a technology preview - practically the only thing they
promised with that version was the the API would be fairly stable. So don't
go expecting great shakes from it; and certainly it's not a version usable
as a primary desktop. 1.92 really is a big leap.
However, it does sound like either it's not installed correctly, or
something is shazamed - you're not attempting to start the KDE2 apps within
KDE1 are you? DCOP stands for Desktop COmmunication Protocol - essentially,
process to process communication. It's like the CORBA stuff in GNOME, in
some respects. Without a DCOP server, KDE2 apps are unable to talk to each
other, and will start to feel lonely ;)
To be honest - I would continue with KDE 1. KDE 2's still not due out for a
while (well, not that long now really.. ) so while it's usable it's not
going to be rock solid by any stretch of the imagination. 1.92 is certainly
much better, though, so try that if you're able.
