Last time I had a problem like this it was incorrect cable - crossed rather
than uncrossed. It's quite hard to break the cable itself through use (100%
redundant, although that doesn't make any difference in this case - you
can't swap broken pairs ;), but it's easy to use the wrong cable. Also, if
you're connecting directly (i.e., not through a hub) you can't use hub patch
cable; it has to be crossed. Unless the network card company saw fit to
include the $2 worth or so of electronics which automatically switches ;)
Doubtful ;))
Cheers,
Alex.
PS. Crossed is: (looking at RJ from top, pin side, left to right)
A --> B
A' --> B'
B --> A
X --> X
X --> X
B' --> A'
X --> X
X --> X
A is 'colour A', A' is 'striped colour A'. E.G, A and A' are two of a pair.
Same for B. X is 'don't care'. This is from memory - if it's wrong, I don't
care :^P Uncrossed is a one-to-one connection, though ;)
