Tom's rootboot sounds like a good candidate to me. Green Frog Linux
(an attempt to create a small *BSD-ports-like Linux distro) used to be
a good candidate for a small machine, but it's been abandoned. People
who want a sane kernel development process are abandoning Linux in
droves these days. :(
muLinux, or the Linux Router Project distro both might be an idea.
I would stay away from any of the majors, because they are just too
bloated. Debian does have a "router install" option, but I've never
tried it.
The main things that Deb has going for it are
(1) they do pristine sources better than any of the other majors,
especially in the kernel
(2) most of the setup tools are simple perl or sh scripts, rather than
being embedded in the package manager.
If you don't want to do emergency surgery on your system, neither of
those is a big consideration.
AFAIK Helix GNOME is now available in .deb form, but I couldn't tell
you where. It's been years since I had a reason to care about GNOME,
but I got one Saturday so I may actually take a look at it again soon.
