Whoever told you this needs to either read a book or subscribe to the
GNUPG mailing list. The authors of GNUPG are not at all aware that
GNUPG is in any way secure. If you compile and install GNUPG you will
notice that when you run it from the command line it will tell you not
to use GPG in a production environment. This means that you are not
to use it for everyday use.
Tripl-DES died quite a few years ago. I suggest that whoever tells
you that this isn't so should be told to shut up. I've seen that
happen in front of me a few times :-)
