the main difference is the bus width. On 30pin SIMMs, it is only 8 bit
(so a 486 with a 32bit bus needs 4 per bank of SIMMs). 72 pin SIMMs have a
32 bit wide bus, so a 486 only needs one per bank, and a pentium (64 bit
wide memory bus) needs 2 per bank.

Thats pretty much it, until you get to things like EDO etc. then it gets
more complex. Basically though, it was a bus and speed thing. Would you
want to put in 8 1mb 30pin SIMMs just to fill a single bank in a pentium
box? I know I wouldn't!!
