[Sheflug] Wierdness with startx after failed v4 install

 I (stupidly) decided to have go at installing XFree86 4.

 It didn't work.

 I'm now back to running 3.3.6 or whatever - however when I run the
command
 
startx -- :1

 to fire up an X server for another user (i.e. me as root after su'ing)
I get presented with the classic HP Unix style X system - i.e. a couple
of terminals and a clock.

 If I login through the login screen, everything is fine - i.e. I get
Helix Gnome.

 How do I force Gnome after a startx?
