[Sheflug] Wierdness with startx after failed v4 install

Reinstall X (and maybe Gnome) from scratch is the easiest way I can
think of.[1]

Either that, or go tracing through the maze of twisty passages all
alike that is the typical startx / xinit installation. The XF86-4
install probably overwrote your startx, so you'll have to figure out
where the (now non-existent) distro startx was calling a script to
start up Gnome. Gnome itself is probably not a hell of a lot better
(for perversion in twisty passages), but IDUISIDK. At least XFree86 4
is unlikely to have touched your Gnome installation in any way, so
once you get it started you'll probably get your expected environment.

Or figure out how to extract the startx and xinit scripts and any
support BS. In Debian it would probably be easy, just force a
reinstall of xserver-common. Maybe that will work for your
installation.

[1] Why does the normal user's day of using Gnome sound so much like
a normal user's day with Windose?
