[Sheflug] ftp problem

Hi,

I'm just trying to set up ftp between a couple of linux boxes - first time
I've needed it - and I'm having problems I don't understand. Any help would
be much appreciated.

I am using gftp and I enter the other machine's hostname 'doodah' in the
appropriate box, leave the 'port' box empty as I don't know what it means
(dohhh), and enter 'root' and the password in the 'user' and 'pass' boxes -
then hit the 'go' button. I get different messages from each machine when I
do this from the respective ends - one machine says

Looking up doodah
Trying doodah.thingy.com:21
Cannot connect to doodah: connection refused
Waiting 30 seconds until trying to connect again.

the other says:

Looking up wotsit
Trying wotsit.thingy.com:21
Connected to wotsit.thingy.com:21
User root
Waiting 30 seconds until trying to connect again.

The network is working OK as I can 'ping' between the two machines OK and
both have clean Samba connections to a windoze box on the net - what have I
not set up or got wrong?? Any ideas? Thanks

Ian
