Re: [Sheflug] Re: slow drives...
I tried setting the 32bit flag on my drive, and gained 0.3 Mb/S. Looks
like it's maxed out. Anyhow, my 15Gb EIDE drive manages:
64Mb in 6.38 seconds = 10.03Mb/sec
And the 8.4 (slave on same channel):
64Mb in 6.6 seconds = 9.7Mb/sec
I only discovered about two days ago that DMA was disabled for both
drives. Since I reenabled it, jerky mouse movement and system slowdown
during busy periouds has dramatically reduced. Annoying that my machine
(and all SuSE based machines I have tried) run updatedb as user 'nobody'
whenever it feels like it. During this, my 15Gb drive managed just:
64Mb in 36.04 seconds = 1.78Mb/sec
Pitiful, ain't it. Is there any way to speed up the system during this
period. It's darn irritating ;-)

Life would be so much easier if we
could just look at the source code.
