this is what i use in my /etc/rc.d/rc.local   script

hdparm -c 1 -d 1 -k 1 -S 180 /dev/hda

this enables DMA and 32bit mode and causes the disk to spin down after about
20 minutes.... you'll see a fantastic change (if it works!)
