Take machine into single user mode (this way you've got the least amount of
stuff running, hence the least amount of memory in use and consequently the
less chance of the swap being needed) using 'init s', disable the swap,
delete the partition, use resize2fs to increase the size of hda3, put the
swap partition back, mkswap and swapon, then 'init 3' (or 4 or 5) to take the
machine back to multiuser.
Whilst you're repartitioning however, fdisk may say its safer to reboot if
some partitions are in use (which is likely)...
I've never used resize2fs, so I can't give hints for using it. You may find
that you can't extend hda3 whilst its mounted (it does contain your root
filesystem), in which case you'll have to find your distriubtion CD's and
boot off them into whatever "rescue" mode your distribution has.
