A quick "hack" to keeping the connection going tits up would be in another
terminal, or as a background task have a 'ping' going to a close machine (ie,
one of your ISP's boxes), as then there is activity. There are other ways ...
do a time sync with your ISP every 5 mins or so (rdate/netdate), pull back
email (fetchmail or some other POP-type process).

What config have you at the moment? ie, what IP address does each machine
(ifconfig in linux, winipcfg in win98/win95) have? And what is in the routing
tables (route/'netstat -r' in linux, route print in win95/98, or winipcfg can
tell the default gateway).

ooo...you'll have the emacs people drawing daggers for calling emacs "just"
an editor :-) emacs vs. vi wars are the epitome of UNIX. You'd have seen one
sooner or later. Some are fairly jest-like and friendly (like 'ere), but I've
seen some turn into right flame-fests on comp.unix.* and comp.os.linux.*
before now...
