Cheers - will try it when I can grab a spare 5 mins. support [at] slackware.com suggested:

   smbmount //snot/mp3 /mnt/mp3 -I <IP address of snot>

but I must say using mount rather than smbmount appeals to me.

I take it smbfs has got to be in the kernel?
