[Sheflug] LOCKED OUT HELP PLEASE

If I understand you correctly, the rescue system has booted so
you should be OK from there.

If not, from this point you can try (1) Alt-F1 or Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get
to an ordinary login and login as root, or (2) reboot to LILO, and hit
Left Shift as the L I L O prompt appears, then type "linux single"
RET, which should get you either to a root login prompt or directly to
a root shell.

/etc/inittab is not an executable; if that's all you typed, the access
being denied is permission to run it as a program.  You need to give
it an executable name (vi, emacs, whatever) to start an editor, such
as

vi /etc/inittab

You won't be able to use a graphical editor, of course.  vi, emacs,
jed, pico, and ae are common editors that are probably installed and
should allow you to get things a little bit fixed.  I recommend the
last two since they are screen-oriented and default to onscreen help.
