under KDE1.92, it should be configurable under the control centre...
the new kmail should also have settings for this...

yes.... albeit a little difficult. The KDE web site provides assistance in
configuring the system to do this (you need some additional scripts)
personally, i gave up trying and stuck with KDE2. the only thing the two
desktop enviroments seem to have in common (from an operational point of
view) is the KDE name.

this is correct. the desktop icons are actually different. one does not seem
to work with the other. remember that the icon is simply a graphical link to
a file.... if you look at the file with a text editor, you will see they are
different format and kde2 has additional info. i beleive it is possible to
change the name of the desktop folder to, say, kdedesktop2... but this would
mean you would have to change several other config files to ensure that kde2
looks at the correct folder. (ie have two kdedesktop folders. one for
kde1.1.2 and one for kde1.92)

kde2 has come a long way since 1.92. i would recomend you upgrade to
kde2.0.1 or later. it is also possible to run kde1 apps under kde2 so
another way round this could be to run KSCD (kde1 version) while running
kde2 desktop. (i think you need the kde1-compat-libs though?) i subscribe to
the kde-user mailing list, i would recommend this to anyone trying to
upgrade from kde1 -> kde2.

i recon if you have a real good understanding of linux (or are just plain
lucky :) you should be able to upgrade sucessfully with the advice available
in the user groups. I took the easy option and upgraded my distro which came
with kde2.0.1. once kde2 is installed, upgrading the packages as bug fixes
are released is quite straight forward.
