ok, I've reinstalled the gateway.  Now got Reiser FS working and it's
really nice :)) If I do netstat -rn on my notebook I get.........
 
Destination  Gateway   Genmask       Flags  MSS   Window   irtt  Iface

127.0.0.0    0.0.0.0   255.0.0.0      U       0       0     0   lo

netstat -rn on the gateway reveals....

I can ping both machines with each other but still can't get the
notebook to download web pages or mail.  I can ping both machines both
ways when the connection is up.

So, what to do next ?
