Hi Craig,

Just type "loadkeys us" at the command line and you're sorted until 
your next reboot.

I haven't looked into how this is configured at boot time... but I 
think that rooting around in /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty/ will 
help. One of the files is called "defkeymap.kmap", and that's the 
default keymap.

A cunning bit of linking and/or renaming will probably sort out your 
system. If not, try 'man loadkeys' for more info & leads.
