the only way we'll see a step forward is if the programming specs for the
winmodem chipsets are made open, or at very least the mfrs produce generic
kernel drivers for them. This applies not only to winmodems of course, but
all the other hardware hiding behind non-disclosure agreements - 3D graphics
chipsets for example.
The only way we'll achieve this is to keep plugging away at the mfrs -
there's a lin drivers petition somewhere on the net for this purpose, or
email individual requests for info or a driver to the guilty parties.
Note that where Winmodem support does exist is it mainly partial - the Cirrus
Logic (now Intel) HaM chipset does have a driver of sorts but it lacks almost
all functionality. Intel promise a driver....don't hold your breath though.
