[Sheflug] ispell aspell in fact any spell with umlauts

Evening All,

I sure there is something subtle that I've missed (read V obvious) but
I can't seem to get ispell or aspell to play nicely with an umlaut. If
the word is 3 characters, for example für, it doesn't cause ispell and
aspell to flag as incorrect if I mistype. I could write Züü and I get
no problems even if the word is marked as English. Longer words eg  
Universität confuses them both. It is flagged as incorrect and the
suggestions are mad. If I write it without the umlaut it suggests
Universita"t Is there something very basic that I've missed here?
What experience to people have with i/aspell and different Character
sets? The ispell docs suggest using the cmd line switch of -T latin1 if
I understand it correct but it seems to make no difference. I've
probably just misunderstood
