What's the type of the underlying filesystem? Is it ext2?
Also, try some of the nfs tools on the local machine (i.e., the machine you're trying to mount) - nfsstat is useful, as is the output of 'exportfs -av', and 'rpcinfo -p'. Give us the output of those, it might help diagnose the problem.
