Not the tech support techs, the technician/engineer techs. And surely
_they've_ been trained? I suppose it's because all windows boxen are
essentially the same (they're not, but play along for a mo'), and all Linux
boxen are different (distro wise) so don't have a common configuration tool.

So, the M$ networking stuff, which differs from release to release, is
classed as all the same, and using ifconfig et al is classed as different?

Sorry if I am going on about this. It's just this weeks bee in the ol'
bonnet ;-)

Tech support. Pay peanuts. Monkeys. etc.

Really, the pay you get for doing "technical" support is absolutely
appalling. More than their job's worth? Quite possibly.
