Maybe mount's having problems? Silly question but have you tried:

	mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/hdc /mnt

ie, tell mount its readonly rather than it finding it out for itself? I 
think it's just a red herring, but it's one less error message to worry 
about. Can't think what else would cause it to say that...
