[Sheflug] CD-ROM woes...

Hi,
I have just been in need of using a CD-Rom, and found that I had
forgotten to compile the kernel with support for it... oh well, a chance
to install 2.2.19, I said, got the file and compiled. To my amazement, I
keep on getting strange errors. Here's a sample session
# mount /dev/hdc -t iso9660 /mnt
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
cdrom: open failed.
mount: No medium found

/dev/hdc is correct, as it can be seen from dmesg:
hdc: CRD-8480M, ATAPI CDROM drive
and the CDROM driver is loaded as well:
hdc: ATAPI 48X CD-ROM drive, 128kB Cache
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.11

The list of loaded modules is:
# lsmod
Module Size Used by
ide-cd 24144 0 (autoclean)
cdrom 27360 0 (autoclean) [ide-cd]
isofs 17376 0 (autoclean) (unused)
lp 5328 0 (autoclean)
rtl8139 11888 1 (autoclean)
esssolo1 22000 0 (autoclean)
soundcore 2576 4 (autoclean) [esssolo1]
parport_pc 7600 1
parport 7488 1 [lp parport_pc]

which looks correct to me. Can anyone suggest anything/anywhere to look
for casualties?

	Thanks
	José
