Did you keep the old kernel kicking around? Have you tried testing the
CD-ROM with that? Did you also compile in all the fs extensions (joliet et
al)?

strace the mount command, see which system call fails. Check the cables to
the cdrom.

Also, there was at one stage a bug in ide-cd which locked the hardware
after a failed mount - reboot the machine, making sure the cdrom isn't
automatically mounted on startup, and try a mount, see what happens.

What has happened to you shouldn't happen :-)
