Not seen it myself, but I've heard a fair bit about it. Although it isn't
the same as a crash of the machine, you have time to sync the disks, and
some programs e.g. pine will save some state for you automatically.

Allegedly yeah. There should also be a patch/revertion of the fork
behaviour that is really starting to get to me in 2.4.4...
