right mouse button and select 'create link to application'. fill in the
details so as to execute pon <isp> and a second applink for poff <isp>. you
can drag these onto the bar at the bottom of your desktop so they are always
available.

i suppose you could always write a script to look for the modem lock file so
as to decide whether to connect or disconnect when the script runs.... that
way you'll only need one icon on the desktop :-)
