Try xine - gpl'd and plays just about everything if you can get the 
win32 codec dlls (does .mpg & VCD as standard though). I forget the 
homepage (maybe www.xine.org?) but a quick search should find it. IMHO 
Anything KDE2 seems to be a memory hog & crashes lots...
