VIA chipsets are the root of all evil.
Kernel oops -> sound -> alsa -> via686a.
Disk corruption in early 2.4 kernels -> via IDE controller.
I think you could make a reasonable some of money, betting on the next
VIA related kernel bug :)

Seems as good a time as any to get another box functional just in case
