I don't bother using qmail's smtproutes - just fire the emails out,
since it caught by Freeserve's mailservers and relayed on from there.

Freeserve are my ISP (eves and w/end only).

Freeserve must have had problems with their mailserver(s), since
there's definitely no issues this end of the wire, and connecting to
another ISP and sending the mail directly with my local QMail rig
worked first time when I reran the queue.
