[Sheflug] CRC errors

Hard disk crc error messages has been mentioned a little while ago. I
acknowledged the question by mentioning that I was getting the same
error message but at the time assumed that this was due to a long ribbon
cable.I managed to find another position for my hard drive, thereby
being able to use a standard length ribbon cable. Problem was not
solved, stil getting the same error messages. Some one mentioned about
buggy VIA chipsets, mine is a ALI.
Setup is:-
	AMD K6-2 450, Gigabyte GA-5AA motherboard, 128meg PC100 ram, voodoo 2000
16meg, hda=20 gig (used for Mandrake 8.0), hdb = dvd/cdr-rw, hdc = 8.4
gig (used for win95), hdd = 40X cdrom.
dmesg however gives hdd = dvd/cdr the others are correct. A few lines
down ther dmesg file, it repeats hda, hdb etc saying what they are but
now gives hdd as a 40X cdrom . ?
then I get repeated message (20 or so times) clm - 6006: writing inode
34887 on readonly FS ?
var/log/messages:- hda DriveStatusError bad CRC message repeated several
times.Probable hardware problem, restoring chipsetup. again many repeats.
Called at my local computer shop (most of the computer internals are
new). they said to download bios upgrade from gigabyte and install it,
which I did but with no improvement.
	Any ideas please?
n.b. not getting crc error message on hdc the one I use for win95.
