Hi, John! Welcome! Very welcome ... just the kind of fellow we like
to see.
I'll leave the detailed information up to the locals (I'm in Japan),
who are a very competent bunch. But I'd like to say that all of your
proposed usages sound feasible. I also think your vague plan sounds
good -- ie, you already know some of the things you _can_ do, and focus
on them. Firewalls (native to the kernel) and file/printer serving
(via Samba) are two of the things Linux does best. While at the same
time you're looking at expanding use of cost-effective Linux solutions
in the long run. Linux is generally pretty good in a multiplatform
context, since so many of us do use it that way.
Also, if you draw a blank on Sheflug on some topic, I recommend taking
a look at the Tokyo LUG mailing list archives at www.tlug.gr.jp.
(Despite the location, the primary language of discussion is English.)
There have been several threads on Samba and firewall configuration in
the last few weeks, and they are perennial topics. Not a primary
resource, but might be useful if you run into something nobody here
has seen before.
