why not read straight from the cammera? as far as i am aware, that is what
gphoto is for! is the media reader listed as a configuration option within
gphoto?

i had the same error with /dev/ttyS0 when i first configured gphoto. either
add yourself to the group (uucp i think) or adjust the permision to allow
access by all... or su root :-)
