Ahh !!  Finally found enough of a brain cell in my head to do 'chmod 
0777 /dev/lp0'.  Gphoto now finds lp0 and allows me to have access.

Now I find that when I select download thumbnails in Gphoto I am 
asked to select a directory and not to download from /dev/lp0.

Anyone know how to get round that one ?
