i use Gphoto for downloading images as you may have gathered from recent 
postings. (if you've just subscribed, checkout the archives on the sheflug 
home page)

i geuss the least technical approach would be to do it by trial and error. 
gphoto supports over 120 camera types several of which use similar protocals. 
if not, do a search on freshmeat..... there are loads of apps there so you 
should find something. good luck.
