All valid points. All have answers in the same vein, which lead to
more similar points. YMMV....

Well, all the distro developers I know, without exception, roll
quickie .rpms or .debs for everything they install, in exactly that
last situation. So obviously for the great majority of developers the
package management systems are (a) easy enough to work with once
learned and (b) valuable admin tools. I think it's worth considering
investing in those tools. You may decide no (and probably _should_
say no to Debian given what you've said, especially about the rc
tree), but others won't.
