That sounds a good plan to me - CD audio is very basic to get working, and
doesn't require any OS drivers (apart from the card mixer in some cases). If
wave files are working and CD audio isn't, that generally indicates hardware
:)

If it sounds okay in Gentus but not in SuSE, it's probably a software thing.
By static, do you mean continuous noise, or blips inbetween sounds, or what?
It can be a number of things - dodgy grounding, for example - but can be a
software thing too.

Did you then comment out the three lines you mentioned? (I think you ought
to!)
