As you seem to infer, setting a hardware-based address is good - Windows
clients don't always like having their IP address changed on them, although
most of the time it's not a problem.

The winipcfg tool (I think that's what it's called) is pretty good for
playing with dhcp stuff. Windows doesn't support the full range of client
options, but ip address, gateway, dns, maybe wins and you're away.
