AFAIK, last message you see on the terminal doesn't necessarily exactly
correspond to the place where it's hung. I still would recommend taking a
working .config from somewhere (RH or whatever), doing make oldconfig,
then starting from that by introducing the changes you are absolutely sure
in. It really does help. BTW, I seem to remember, that by booting to
single user mode you then can try starting services manually, following
the boot sequence - then you'd know exactly. I presume, loopback device is
configured in the kernel? Also, since the boot script IS written by RH
primarily for the use with THEIR precompiled kernels, it's another
argument in favour of trying their standard (one of) .config.
