Thanks for the info guys - now going into deep thought mode.........
I was thinking of something for my business but the 'top end' example would
be way out of my range. I have a virtual server setup for our band
www.hathersagebrassband.com but this just points at my normal website (£40 a
year from Internetters by the way) but this, of course, only uses a dynamic
IP. What I was wondering was how practical it would be to give folks out in
the big wide world access to database stuff on one of my own machines.

I did actually point that out:
a virtual server (a good one) will be about that [£100/month] or less.
