Okay, here's a run-down for a professional colocation (I have a number of
servers running websites for my employer in such a situation):
Install
======
1u Server: £3000
1u Colo'd Rack Install: £700
Running
======
Bandwidth, UPS, Tape, 1u: £700
All approx. So you're talking ~£4000 initial layout, about £700 going
forwards (about 12G a year). Doesn't include domain name, but does include
IP addresses (you need one for every https server).
If you want something a bit less professional, you can make do with such
things as static IP adsl or virtual serving. Personally, the ISP option is
always the best, but some people prefer having their own machine on their own
connection for whatever reason. ADSL's going to knock you back £300ish on
install, £100 month ongoing (so, about £1200 year, or one-tenth the cost of
co-lo), a virtual server (a good one) will be about that or less, and will
probably be quicker if you go somewhere good, and won't suffer adsl problems
(upstream adsl is slow, and that's exactly wrong for web-serving: if there's
assymmetry, you really want it in the other direction). You may not get an IP
on a virtual server, you may only get a name and a login account.
Cheers,
Alex.
