To be quite honest, I've been trying to drum up the courage to install the
Alcatel Speedtouch patches and recompile the kernel on my Netfinity server.
I've done kernel rebuilds before, but not for a while.
The other alternative was to wait for the SEG Vigor USB router to come
out... hopefully later this month, according to their web site. I still
reckon that's my preferred option, especially as the old PC I've got hasn't
(I don't think) got any USB ports... that's the one I was planning on
loading Smoothwall on. It wouldn't have been a problem had I been able to
get my first choice connection (see below).

It's Win2k, but I've got Wingate running on my Win2k server, portmapping all
http stuff through to the Linux box.

True... but I'm not paying, and I only had to point out to the boss the
benefit from a security point of view of a static IP :-)
It's not as expensive (by a long chalk) as a fully routed solution. The boss
originally agreed to that (1MB), but I failed the line length test by 50
metres, so had to go for RADSL. Having said that, I get 512k down and 256k
up so I'm not complaining. My biggest problems are the dodgy USB ports on
this Socket A Abit KT7-A motherboard and the fact that the processor fan
(huge dirty great thing) makes a noise like a small hovercraft which means I
have to switch the gateway machine off at night.

Nah. I dont think so, because I was accessing the Linux box from the Wingate
server.Things seem to communicate in a bit of a strange way, IE5 especially.
Despite it being set to use the proxy on localhost, it seems to bypass
Wingate altogether. ALso, Wingate seems to have a deep dislike of routing
private IP address ranges (10.x.x.x, 192.168.x.x etc). I couldn;t use it on
private dialup to route through to our company networks which are obviously
all on private address ranges inside the firewall.
Having said that, I will check Wingate out again. I might be able to try
from my laptop as well. Maybe over the weekend... but I've got playtime
first... apparently, my Netgear wireless access point and PC card have
shipped, so I'll be ripping some CAT-5 off the staircase and installing the
access point in the study.
Marvellous... and because it means fewer wires, SWMBO actually approves of
"another" bit of kit coming in to the house!
