You could recompile it to put support in - that would probably be at the 
expense of other stuff though, and would require you to do a lot of work to 
make it happen.

AFAIK ext3 uses the same disk label, so it would be recognised as ext2 (why 
not, it's compatible, which is roughly the same). You have to rebuild the 
journal though, I believe, when going from ext2->ext3.
