Well, you don't necessarily need to be a programmer to actually compile and
run stuff, although it obviously helps a lot. But, I was thinking more
actually running unix stuff other people had compiled:
http://www.mirror.ac.uk/collections/hensa-micros/local/riscos/unix/
.. which requires unixlib.
Usually, a good way of getting into things is to follow a build-it-yourself
guide (http://www.forwiss.tu-muenchen.de/~dehmel/DIY.html, for example) and
see how far you get. The first few times you attempt it, you probably won't
get anywhere. Then, for some reason, something usually clicks and everything
starts working.

I think you can delete the 'for RISCOS' part ;)

It's a lot nicer environment on Linux. I'd advise KDevelop myself - learn C++
and do things in KDE. It's probably the fastest way to get non-trivial things
working, which will do wonders for the confidence - you actually feel like
you're achieving things. There are a number of decent books too (see the
Sheflug book review pages, for examples).
If you want to do something with immediate practical implications, you could
go to ActiveState and get a copy of Komodo and do some stuff in Perl. Doing
CGI for webpages can be good fun, and Komodo is a decent Perl environment.
Perl looks a bit frightening at first, then you realise it isn't, and then
you realise it's powerful. perlmonks.org is a good resource too (just avoid
Obfuscation and golf - that will scare you ;)
Cheers,
Alex.
