[Sheflug] Re: Partitioning
Hi All,
While we're on the subject of partitioning, I'd like to hear what
people think about the position of the swap partition.
SuSE puts swap straight after /boot, at the beginning of the disk
(which I guess, physically, would be the inside edge). After a few
crashes with cranky old distros and h/w, we solved a lot of problems
by putting swap at the end of the disk (the outside edge?). That way,
if swap bugs rear their ugly heads, they don't overrun into another
partition.
Arguments I've heard about where to put swap go like this:
Beginning of the disk gives faster disk access.
End of the disk gives better data integrity if swap bugs rampage.
But the other day I heard a new one:
End of the disk is faster on recently manufactured disks.
If that last argument is good, then I guess that about wraps it up
for swap on the beginning of the disk - end it is. But is it true? Or
are there other factors to take into account?
Another thing: recently someone told me that more than 128mB of swap
is never used. Is this always true, or only true for earlier kernel
versions, or just not true at all?
Cheers,
James
