[Sheflug] linuxcare?

was just idly browsing about laptops as I'm planning on getting one and
came across the linuxcare site.
I wondered how good their stuff is. They supposedly do hardware
certification for linux compatibility. Well, perhaps some of you are
connected with them anyway.

I found the "linuxcare university" concept a bit puzzling. I didn't
think that anyone could announce that they were a University, something
about charters or some such? I'm probably hopelessly out of date here.

the "Linux Standard Base" seems to be an attempt to impose some kind of
uniformity or order on the various linux distributions. Is this
something that is widely supported and likely to succeed?

the philosophy and approach of linuxcare seems at first glance to be
quite different from what I've seen of the open source community, but
maybe this is just a superficial impression. I see IBM has a hand on
this and we were pointed recently to information about the large
investment IBM is making in linux/open source. Presumably with big
players putting big money in they won't be content just to let things
evolve in their own sweet way but will have a strong interest in
developments that increase their profitability.

Certainly the "complete linux system on a minidisk" idea sounds interesting.

slightly puzzled of Sheffield,

Matt.
