Reinstalled RH7.2. Taking note of some of your replies I get the following.
ls -l /dev/cdrom* this gives  /dev/cdrom -> /dev/scd0
                         and        /dev/cdrom1 -> /dev/scd1
fstab lists /dev/cdrom & cdrom1 as /mnt/cdrom & cdrom1. /dev/cdrom is a
standard ide cdrom and yet fstab lists it as scd0 and not hdb as I would have
expected. cdrom1 is the writer. (dmesg does mention that scsi host adaptor
being used for both drives). If I change fstab to list these as /dev/hdb &
hdc, on reboot the next day, these fstab entruies have been illiminated & the
original entries put back in. I can't find a mount (eg mount /dev/hdb, mount
/dev/scd0, mount mnt/cdrom) that works. All I get is /dev/cdrom or
/dev/cdrom1 is a unknown device. However I now have Xcdroast finds these 2
cdrom drives, it will copy/write cd's with no problem. Unfortunately
Xcdroast lists the drives as what they are eg. Toshiba 40X cdrom and not by
their device name, so I can't gain a clue from there. I've tried some links
but these reply back that the device is already linked to cdrom drives.
Got lost on the devfs plot sorry.
